Duncan Laurence’s music contains a glimmer of promise. While the Dutch singer/songwriter usually exposes his soul, addressing topics like grief, loss, and loneliness, there is always a silver lining. That’s especially true for his new track, “Electric Life,” which explores loss as a transformational experience. This new period, which includes his beautiful sophomore album, is the culmination of a lengthy, methodical journey toward healing that began in infancy. Laurence’s parents split when he was a child, and his grandparents’ home—where his grandmother frequently sang to him when he was anxious—was a safe haven.

Laurence got even more attached to music after being ridiculed at school, but he found solace when a physical therapist suggested he take piano lessons to cure a motor issue. He soon felt he’d found his calling: to sing, perform, and be vulnerable in front of the entire world. After finishing school, he worked on “Arcade,” a song that would transform his life. The ballad went on to win Eurovision and receive over ten billion global streams. In the United States, it became the first song from the competition to chart in 25 years, reaching No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
